My 8 hour flight home doesn’t seem that long after 2 solid months of travelling- with day long train rides and a great deal of walking.

I did a little rough map route of the entire trip, estimated that I’ve travelled a grand total of 41,410.8 kilometres.

That’s about 845 kilometres a day, or about 35 kilometres an hour.

We’ve never really gave this part of the trip a name. So just wrote it as The Great Crossing in our schedule and name stucked somehow. It’s the bit where we cross the whole European continent along the Mediterranean in one trip, from Istanbul to Barcelona.

We started off with a flight from Istanbul to Rome via Turkish Airlines. Pretty much a non-event because I was so flat out tired from the Conference.

When we got to Rome, the Airport “Express” was late and drove us nuts. Fortunately in a very Italian way, the train to Civitavecchia (Rome’s seaport) was late as well so it worked out.

This is one big chuck of a ferry. More like a cruiser but not really a luxury liner. It’s like a four star hotel on water with propellers. It was a good break cruising for two days on the Mediterranean.

Hi people, sorry for being “missing” for about a month. If you can appreciate, I was packed day to night for two weeks in Barcelona, then spent one week in Finland where internet is way too expensive, then finally one week again to properly settle down again in Sydney.
I have to say, this last part of the journey had been the most surreal. Trust me, WAY surreal. The most interestingly unbelievably bizarre events! Hopefully I will be able to put it up during the weekend.
As for now, back to work!

Nice, everything’s so clean and prim and proper this country. No time to document anything because we’re rushing for our flight. Will spend due effort on return leg of journey.

Much of this flight was spent sleeping. It was my first actual real sleep since Tuesday (had an all-nighter up to the flight, to finish something due next week).
Pretty uneventful except that we met a nice guy who showed us everything we wanted to know about Finland, including the locations of some Alvar Aalto stuff.

Oh yea! I also discovered that the proper way to say Helsinki is … HEL-SING-KEE … not HEL-ZIN-SKI ….
As in “What the HELL, you’re SINGing out of KEY“.

This is the first day of my journey, visiting in 55 days – 20 cities in Europe!
It started after enrolling in a Barcelona Workshop as an elective, and it turned into a full blown Europe L’Excursion Grande in a matter of days! Thanks to the influences of my good travel companion and colleague, Jeff Shih-Hao Chiang. I will attempt to upload pictures everyday and comment on them.
For my architectural peers, I will be visiting the canonical Barcelona Pavilion, Zumthor’s Therme Vals, The Parthenon and much much more.
Leaving the front of this computer now in about an hour. From here I will fly to Bangkok, Thailand and then transit in Helsinki, Finland and then arriving in Paris, France – a magnificent 22 hours in cramped seat goodness.
I will elaborate more as this blog grows until then, wish me Bon Voyage!
